Historically orthopaedic was dealing more with congenital defect or sequellae from hip, knee, spine disease. Like poliomyelitis or tuberculosis.
There were also sequellae from fractures. Historically fractures were often done by no-medical trained personal.
Ortheses and prosthesis were created for helping people dealing with their burden.
In the last 50 years the huge progress made in surgical joint replacement, in Switzerland with Prof M.E. Muller ,in England with Prof J.Charnley, in France with Prof L.Judet.
Also in the last 50 years operative treatment of fractures has evolved with the work of the AO group, created by M E Muller, R.Schneider, H.Willenegger and M.Allgöwer.
During my residency in Fribourg I trained in children and adult traumatology, hand surgery and hip replacement under the guidance of Dr H.B.Burch, a former fellow of M.E.Muller.
During my residency in Lausanne University Hospital I trained in adult and children orthopaedic.
